Since we are entering into cold and flu season, there is no doubt in our minds that some of
our readers will probably get a cold or sick while they are pregnant this winter. Having a cold is never fun, being pregnant AND having a cold – well that is like a trip to the dentist to fill a cavity.
There are many preventative measures you can take to keep yourself from getting a cold. It all starts with good handwashing practices. If you are around someone with a cold or even shopping at the grocery store, wash your hands and sanitize them – along with the shopping cart to help prevent getting a cold.
A few other tricks to stay healthy are by taking your vitamins, getting enough sleep and eat nutritiously. We know cravings can sometimes get in the way, but try to sneak in an apple between brownies.
If you are unlucky, and you get a cold during pregnancy, it is not the end of the world. You probably need to change up your cold routine to something safe for baby. Be sure to get enough rest, drink your fluids and continue to eat well.
To reduce congestion from coughing: grab your humidifier from the basement and place it in your room at night. When you sleep, keep your head elevated, and you can even try using nasal strips. If you have a sore throat, suck on ice chips, drink warm tea and gargle with warm salt water.
Many over the counter medications are not safe to take during pregnancy, but if you do need to take something, consult your doctor before doing so, and they will be the best judge to help guide you to safe alternatives. Additionally, you should consult your doctor if you have a fever above 102 degrees Fahrenheit or if your symptoms are causing you to stop eating or sleeping.
